D Rhodes
D Rhodes (she/her) is a self-taught mixed media artist and poet, cat mom, and dual US/UK citizen. She has been living in Scotland since 2010. At the moment she is mostly focussed on filling her sketchbooks and handmade books as a way to both meditate and develop her mark making oeuvre. She makes occasional forays into mixed media self portraiture which explores what it’s like having an energy limiting condition and severe osteoarthritis. She finds true joy in looking at the work of other artists.
My aim in creating this self portrait is to literally put a face on hidden conditions such as fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions such as arthritis. I wanted to get across a visceral representation of it while also giving a few layers of complexity and perhaps even a bit of dark irony/humour. I don't know if I hit the mark, but I can say one thing with certainty: it feels good to try.
