Spike Barwis
they/them

Spike is a multidisciplinary painter working primarily in oils. Their work uses a classical visual language to realize powerful but relatable and mundane images of the queer domestic setting. A highly technical practice allows Spike to create work that is layered with nurturing energy. Comparable to ritual acts such as making the bed and drinking coffee; building supports and making oil paints from scratch allow connection and mindfulness throughout. The paintings aim to convey the joy of being able to live in their own home whilst acknowledging the sanctuary this provides is unfortunately a luxury for many of the LGBTQ community.
what does still here mean to you?
“Still Here” speaks to me about the unfair stereotyping and erasure of queer identities. This exhibition shows that we are still here and are as diverse as ever.
