Are Etsy Witches Legit?

Women across the internet are praising Etsy witches for making specific events in their lives happen, such as getting a job after months of unemployment, helping hair grow faster, or generating large amounts of cash. But is there anything legitimate behind one of these so-called spells? Is it a placebo effect? I’m hiring an Etsy witch to really find out.

The history of witchcraft is a detailed, tragic and intriguing one, especially the history of Scottish witchcraft and the persecution of ordinary women for made-up ‘crimes’.

However, witchcraft has recently moved from holistic healing that women are accused and punished for, and has morphed into an empowering tipping of the scales of life and luck - whether in the pursuit of a job, a change in physical appearance, a feeling of clarity, or a decision-making sign from the universe.

Now, the question of whether they work or not is semi-impossible to answer, because it all depends on what you believe. And I’m not trying to change any minds here - if you’re a steadfast believer in witchcraft and fate, then you keep doing you! And likewise for if you think it’s all fake and won’t believe in anything I’ll tell you throughout this experience. 

What I am trying to do throughout this experiment is provide anyone who’s a little uncertain about their careers, choices, or relationships, with a possible solution - maybe you could use a little magic! 

I’m coming at this from my own open-minded belief in little pieces of magic and witchcraft, and an understanding that there maybe is something out there influencing our actions and achievements, but also that it needs a hands-on approach - I’m never going to get that dream job if I myself don’t go to the effort of applying to it.

The spell I bought is this one, that advertises itself as flooding you with money and attracting wealth to your person. And it was to begin on the same day!

After purchasing the 1-3 months package, I kept a log noting any fluctuations in my income, and at the end of month one, I noticed I’d sold more items on my Vinted than I had in previous months. I was also scheduled on more shifts at the bar where I work, which drove my income and tips up over the course of the month. It could be that each of these instances are the spell’s doing, or maybe it’s coming up to summer and people have a little extra income and my colleagues are going on holiday.

Month two saw a job offer coming in that would let me continue working at the bar and continue my writing, but with a higher pay! I was busier and checking my banking app didn’t fill me with the same anxiety. I had more opportunities offered to me for summer programmes and placements, and got more bookings and requests for catsitting jobs! Big things were happening and I still had my personal and hobby time, which was a lovely change of pace that instilled the confidence that I can make this work and not have to work myself to death. 

At the end of the three month package, nothing special happened - my bank account didn’t suddenly empty itself and I didn’t get many more shifts cut than normal. But there was a change in my morale towards saving and making money. It felt more like an uphill battle, I was less motivated to go to work and entertain for tips, I wrote less and felt less supported in my industry. I made less money in the month after the package ran out.

I don’t think this ending was because the package ran out - the successes and failures throughout this experiment weren’t without my own personal effort and action, which was potentially boosted by the notion that someone else out in the world was rooting for me to be successful. This kind of encouragement and the assurance that something is currently in the works for you is provoking and insists that you take an active role in making your desired future happen. 

If you’re at a point in your life where you feel isolated, anxious or uncertain, I do think that buying a cheap spell online is a kind of retail therapy that is less consumerist, and gives you a boost of motivation to pursue your dreams. If you believe something is destined to happen because of an Etsy spell, maybe the worries telling you it’s not for you will go away, like they did with me. 

At the core of the success of Etsy witches is a belief in the powers of the universe and believing that good things are coming your way. A negative perspective and mind will never produce a positive life, and if you don’t believe in yourself and the life you want, then it’s never going to happen. So maybe it is a magic spell you can get for the price of a coffee, but maybe more of it is simply believing in yourself and trusting that, with enough effort, success, luck and love can and will come to you.
